Sherwood Githens Middle School; Durham, NC.
Githens is a large, urban middle school comprised of a very diverse student population, a majority of whom are socioeconomically-disadvantaged. The Media Center, although large, was a neglected facility which contained an outdated collection and few technology resources. Over my six years there, I updated the collection through writing grants, and made the environment more welcoming by means of PTA grants and 'creative' rearrangement. As well as teaching grades 6-8, I maintained the circulation and catalog databases, collaborated with teachers, chaired the Media/Technology Committee, revived student enthusiasm and participation in the Battle of the Books, brought cultural opportunities to the students, and communicated with the parent population via newsletters and blogs. During this time, I obtained National Board Certification, ESL Certification, became a certified Augustine reading tutor, received Metametric Lexile training, acted as a website evaluator for LearnNC (UNC), was awarded grants for both print and nonprint resources, contributed to staff development sessions, brought in public library personnel to encourage student use of library resources, held book fairs both onsite and at book stores, encouraged integration of technology into the media curriculum and helped district administration in the creation of library policy and development of 'opening collection' lists for new schools. |
